Lunar eclipse and limitless possibilities

Waking up on a cold fall day and looking for the predicted eclipse. Finally it is there, only not easily seen from the back door. Put on winter gear for frigid temps (maybe 15 degrees), bring the dog (he can't miss this!) open the camera shutter (it sometimes freezes half open) and run out to the North. I see it, I capture it and run back in to the house.

It's the fall of 2011. I am still learning at the library (my worksite) to stay flexible and aware of changes. I am happy to note more people are using online books from our catalog. Still constant is the book readers who come in to the library. We greet them and help them find a good read; Personal attention is vital to some, not to others. Back to sewing this week, I am bringing my machine back to the dining table and spreading out the projects.
In the picture is Wilson, my springer spaniel, who I see first thing in the morning; He is always happy to see me and go outside. We have breakfast and I linger over coffee.
The roses are from the florist promotion, give 2 things for food shelf, + $10 = 12 roses.

this is a rug made of strips of 2 1/2 wide sewed and woven. I did finish it with a blue print border. I like this picture better. It's my Ford tractor.

I sewed this with 5" Thangles from a pattern for a tablecloth. I am getting the backing on now, quilting it then Use it on my table for family togetherness events.

When I was practicing downloading e-books to my laptop, I repeated the steps too much and "corrupted" my account. After a two week waiting period, Today I was able to download a book from the library and transfer it to the color nook. I got a non-fiction book on women of the wild west. I am going to read it on the Color Nook this week, then I will come back and review the book.
Today I removed the programs from my Laptop which I don't use. I also removed Adobe Digital Editions, then re-installed it from the tds.lib.overdrive.org website.
As I was doing all this I did have a bit of a problem deleting expired books from the Nook. The instructions direct you to delete files while connect to the computer via cord.
I will report back here how it goes. I had two copies of one of the books called "The Smartest Woman I know". It was downloaded for practice by Dani K. at tds who was helping me on the phone with my laptop today.
If and WHEN I am successful with the reading of a book on the Nook, then I am going to try downloading an audio book with overdrive software and listening to it via my MP3 player.
All part of a librarian's "homework". Plus it's true I wanted to learn how to use the nook because I may buy one someday.

Barn Quilts

Started a Barn Quilt on April 27, 2011 at Wells Community Ed. class held at Renee Holmes farm 12 miles East of New Richland. We painted the primer after sanding our 4 ' square plywood panels. May 3, 2011, we returned to work again. The panels were all primed, 2 coats, applied by Renee and Marilyn. We drew our design grid, taped the edges and applied the first color. A photographer was present from the New Richland paper. We were all photographed in front of Renee's barn quilt. We were told this is the first barn quilt painting class in Minnesota. Guess we could be famous. I chose a pattern called "old glory" in red, white and blue. It will be jazzing up my farm in a few short weeks.

I have been part of the "First Edition" (title of Blue Earth Community Library's newsletter) for 3 years. We are creating the 45th issue for December 2010. I list new titles with name of author. We have a feature article that tells about activities going on here. The ornament workshop is being planned now. We have news of the Cookbook Club, an spot for "Ask Dewey", and a Technology news spot called "Bytes". There can be lots more: Particularly the book reviews written by staff or patrons. But I am usually looking for ideas from other librarians online. I follow a few in Twitter, 23thingsonastick ning, www.librarything.com, and facebook.
The letter amounts to one page, double sided, which is available at the desk and on the library website www.becl.org. I enjoy doing it and hope that it encourages people to read more and become internet savvy. I would like to do an article on searching online. Compare google with bing and yahoo. I use google for so many things, I don't need anything else. But it is good to look at other search vehicles. There is usually something to learn, for instance, the vocabularly (which I can use). People don't realize how many words to use and how to choose words for a search.

Twitter is great up to the second news!

The game was not on TV, I logged in to Twitter and got a play by play announcements and comments extraordinarily exciting!
That was the day I was hooked on Twitter. Since that time I log in when I am in need of news. Plus I have found authors, and book publishing firms announcing new books, giving opinions, links to book excerpts and articles. I have a weatherman I follow, also.
All the people I follow are people I have not met in person. Whereas in Facebook, I know all.

Library used books

I brought home very well worn books by Erma Bombeck, that's what this librarian couldn't throw in the dumpster. Why? She was a funny mother, my idol. I tried to be as interesting as possible as I could be to my kids so they would always desire a stimulating environment.
The library used book nook has regular visitors (and irregular visitors). The money goes in the bank since we don't have an active Friends of the Library group to manage it. Friends assist and promote the Library, have meetings and enjoy.
I have been working at the Library since Nov. 12, 2001. My job has grown and so have I. This blog is part of the training involving online learning. On librarything also, where I list favorite books, my name is CoriatLib. I am Corinne at the Library

Spring 2010

A long winter confined us inside due to volumes of snow here in the midwest and due to economics. Spring is here. Time to revitalize, time to renew our vow to improve ourselves in the workplace. Yes, librarians can be discouraged during long periods of winter, in this case it was lack of stimulation in the form of education. Have to know what we are doing wrong to do it better. Lifting myself out of the doldrums, I am committing myself to leaning more. The 23 things on a stick is in it's third bout of online instruction. More and more things to review and learn from. #48. We are talking about twitter. I enjoy tweeting. I follow some librarians, book publishers, authors, celebrities = Sven Sundgard, our weather man posts his photos on trips to Argentina, Norway, Hawaii. So, I am going on with the program. Librarians got know stuff!

I read the linked in Digital posters which were educational pages on a topic with illustrations and text posted together. Looks like a real good tool for learning to put photos and text on a page with a theme. It was like a wiki illustrated page. I would like to try this.

Thing 46: Webjunction

I started using Webjunction MN in 2003 when I was working at The Etta C. Ross Library Museum; and needed answers to questions on cataloging. I was able to ask questions of the librarian community online. I did very well with the help provided. Presently(2009), I am taking a online course in Adobe software. It is more difficult than the previous class I did 2 years ago (2007). But I hope to complete it. I want a book or practice workbook to learn. Sometimes the software doesn't cooperate. Maybe because I am a visual learner.

With a slow connection, I don't do this everyday. I do log in to Kare11.com and myfox9.twincities.com and look at the ideas that are available. I have watched shows I missed in a series at abc.com and like that.
it is so handy to watch what you want to online. I especially like finding the Iowa public TV schedules so I don't miss a good show.

I made a fun photo tale using Smilebox. it is some pictures in a slide show. I am using Flickr and gather. I store photos online at these sites. I can make slide show or use them in other ways. I am still exploring cool tools.

At the workshop "Reference in the Electronic Age" we were introduced to libraries which have active web sites containing links to Instant Messaging tools using a widget entitled Ask a Librarian. The AskMinnesota site is manned by 8 county libraries who take time to log in and answer im questions. This is a new service and quite exciting. Our library doesn't have the means for it, but it is cool. We use several websites for our Face To Face encounters with patrons at our main circulation desk. What we learned is to communicate, ask the questions to narrow the searching. And to show and tell, or explain as you work so by doing this the patron knows where to look, how to find answers and will not be impatient while you are working on their question or request.
Has anyone got any tips to add? I appreciate comments!

Books and more: What's helpful? 1. to find the next in a series, 2. To find a good book, and 3. To record what books you have read and how well you liked them.
I have used Worldcat, NoveList and librarything.com with great success. the Site called Overbooked which is in facebook looks very good whereas the iread application (in facebook) is not.
Librarians need to find the right book fast. Also, we need to find the right information. Looking more at #34 in next post.

I have used myyahoo homepage and igoogle. Both took a little extra time. I found the template too constricting. I see that netvibes or pageflakes are reported to be easier to use. I will try them and blog on my findings.
Myyahoo homepage doesn't have as much as igoogle page offers. Igoogle was somewhat easier to set up, with a variety of things I recognized and was able to use. But neither has everything I am looking for, so I will keep busy.

The twitter tool is all about communicating quickly. Libraries are about information storage and sharing. So twitter could be used to post information, but I am not sure what kind. Here is a concise summary, "Twitter is a microblogging tool, an alerting system, a type of IM, a social network, a status updating tool like IM away messages, a conversation, and more. For librarians, it appears destined to be an essential conference tool as well as a personal productivity tool that can be used for creating to-do lists, tracking bug fixes, brainstorming with colleagues, and generally keeping in touch with friends."

I subcribed to ning at the last of 23thingsonastick and found it to be really cool. It is so much more professional in layout. It tings!
I joined a group, added photos into a slide show, and made comments in some of the discussions. I am in a group on ning with my classmates from high school also.

Thing 25 Blogger Tools

Adding gadgets to the blog makes the page more interesting to viewers when they open it up. So I think it is a good idea to grab the viewers attention and then blog to keep it.
I may put the blogger tips gadget on, when I find it again. It seems to have disappeared from my first viewing. So I just put on a LOGO today. Maybe next time. IN viewing other peoples blogs, I found their first page to be the most interesting. I want to try a few more templates and adding pictures to find what suits me. Subject matter and pertinance are my criteria for gadgets. What do you think?

Logged in the last week in January and changed colors along with the format of this blog. I have continued my path of learning with webjunction class. At the library I have encouraged a Friends group; written a newsletter monthly, and attended technology workshops/training programs offered by TDS. Been working with my digital camera, using Windows media player and just putsing and experimenting with any new gadget which I have access to. After some problem logging in, I found the Mozilla browser to be the right choice to display morethingsonastick.pbwiki. Time seems to be the GREATEST obstical to overcome. But I am committed and determined!

Lifelong learning

It is August. Earlier this summer I researched Lifelong learning as part of the MN Volunteers Certificate for Librarians. Libraries are the hub, the place to find information, and we have that challenge to fill for the public everyday. A child with a catapillar said "can we look up on the internet and find what kind of butterfly this would be?"
That happens all the time. August seems to be the month with the most genealogy questions. For insects and for people!
We use a resource on the internet: ancestry.com, and find it a valuable tool. There is so much to learn.

In Facebook I joined 2 groups, Libraians and Technology, and Lib 2.0 group to communicate with someone else in my same job.
Facebook may be the fastest growing social network: It is a quick way to connect. You find out what's going on. My view of it is that I found it more complicated in that it offers more choices (is the term mashups?) of ways to connect all in one. Yes you get an integrated conglomeration of technology. In other words it takes some study. Libraries could use this to be connected to a lot of people at once.

MySpace How are libraries using MySpace? There are two links I will look at tomorrow. I looked at Hennepin's myspace. It was really important to relate to the teens.
Did you find anything on a library's MySpace page that would be useful for your library?
If you created your own MySpace page, how do you plan to use it?
It would require a IT person to manage the MySpace account. We are just too small of a library for the expence. We have a web page now, so this may develop in the future. It would provide more immediate communication to and from public.

These videos are shown on local news sometimes. It is one "thing" I will have to use the library computers as this is dial up. One of the public computers I used yesterday didn't allow saving the avi file on the desktop, so I tried uploading from my camera and that was a no go. But maybe I can try one more thing. I have a 30 sec. video to upload. I will try my facebook account or flickr. I did view several library themed youtube videos. They are entertaining sometimes.

I love music and would like better access to my favorites.
You don’t have to have an iPod or a MP3 player to listen to podcasts, although a portable device is handy. Since podcasts use the MP3 file format, a popular compressed format for audio files, you just need a PC with headphones or a speaker.
Listened to two of the Resourses podcasts of librarians talking about their work. Then listened to MPR and am planning a tune download with Amy tomorrow.
Ok, so I need to pay to download most music, I have to find some freebies.

Wow this looks really interesting. I did a EBSCO search for Library 2.0, Libraries and Technology (search words) and found several articles to use in my MN Voluntary Certification Study. Next I will work on the Search Alert, and Page Composer.

I did a subject search on “smoking youth” in InfoTrac Student Edition and set up an RSS feed to my google reader to track the search results for 1 month. Then I did another search on Library and Technology to track new results. BTY the short video link in Here are the Things did not play a video.

I would be interested in seeing how many students use this tool. It looks very helpful. I think home school students would benefit from this organizational tool, also.
In Feb / March we have the science project with lots 5th graders in seeking information.
Most of the students know just what they need and where to find it. They are so far ahead of most adults in knowing what's accessible.
I recommend online library research tools to adults who are taking college classes online.

Libraries are sometimes the holding tank of the latch key kids. Games have become entertainment for people with time on their hands. Children and adults who pay online games become very good negotiators. They stay quiet for long periods of time.
The Library is a safe place to hang out. Gaming is great.
Libraries have to place time limits on computer usage when their are not enough computers for everyone to use. Someday we may all be carrying around our own devices for gaming. It would be too bad because of all the traffic those games bring in.
Puzzle Pirates has cute characters, should be fun, I will try it! Aye mateys! It is fun, the bilging game with all the water bubbles, yikes. My pirate name is Coravast, best blimey beware!

Thing # 13 Try online productivity tool.

Yes, I have myyahoo set up on my computer. It is sweet. I open my most often used pages right here. The down side is it takes longer to open.
I set up an igoogle.com home page at my work station and I found that it was loading slower than a blank google.com page. BUT, if I didn't have to log off, shut down each time I approached my PC, or switch applications often at work, THEN this tool would be Fantastic.
Does anyone else have slow loading problems with igoogle home pages?

Okay, this will list your books in your library, home or anywhere. In the blog you can read about the ins and outs. Sounds good to have an automatic cataloging system.

Will this let everyone who reads it a list of the books you own. I am interested to see how this improves my web experience. The library would be share the books, open up discussions on choosing what is in the collection. I can see the advantage if those books were available for study. Would you look up the exact words Ophelia said to Hamlet in Act 1, Scene 3.

Wow, you have to be into the news to like these sources. Zillions of links/briefs of news. The news articles and pages all lumped to gether = total news media overkill! This would be a source of news for people who do not have radio, TV , or newspaper delivery. It could be used for research of something for studying. After reading the hints from Minn23 and further reading I get it - Digg is useful in getting the news you choose. It is a list of links sure, but it is community chosen, so it is most popular topics in the world. Yes it's worldly and on at any time of day. Most interesting. Thanks for the hints!

Tagging is an original and unique file system. I used it in flickr and this time I used it to search by tags. It is a valuable tool. Del.icio.us links you with all those favorites and saves those at one place. I am inspired to orgainize!
The library sample is truly helpful. It is a page with lists of links to click on for information on subjects we all can use. Here you can find answers! Love that!

Thing # 10 exploring wikis

Well, this tool is for information sharing. I would like to create a wiki, in the sandbox or with pbwiki. When I do I will post a link here. The library could use this tool to inform the community about the library, perhaps the floorplan, special items in the collection and opportunites only available at the library. That kind of thing would be helpful, then link it to the community Chamber of Commerce website as a asset of the community!

I edited a famous doc (a page of the Declaratoin of Independence) and sent it here. It appears just before this entry. Kinda kinky fun playing with words. When I looked at ZOHO, I got lost in the Library of Congress site admiring the art collection. At the opening page of zoho, i noticed it was slightly more scholarly - or complicated -may be the word. I don't know how I would use this as a library clerk, except for the fact I have done it and can help the customer proceed with it.

I have now added a PictureTrail account to store photos and share them with family. It is good practice. This thing requires patience to upload, and Diligence to sort and arrarnge. I want to add Library use to this. In my slideshow I have pictures of the route to the library in Blue Earth.
I added a diary to track my participation in the MN Voluntary Certificate quest. It is in livejournal.com. This is getting complicated, I am starting to feel like taffy, pulled in several directions.
Showing the ins and outs of the library seems to be my only library connection so far. I have pictures of the staff included.

Thing 7 Communication Tools

IM has great connecting capabilities for kids with friends they need to talk to - constantly, Me? Not so much. Perhaps it could be used in larger libraries in some way? Tools we use at Blue Earth Community library...email is used for notices, holds particularly work well. Webinar attended here at library, hooked up with Minitex last October. I used the internet T1 connection here and telephone connection for sound. It was very worthwhile, I enjoyed listening to the discussion with everyone involved. Very valuable learning tool that we see used by schools and colleges.
We do have a website becl.org, on it we post our newsletter which is one year old this month. And we have a address to e-mail questions to our director, Eva Gaydon. Mostly we have received genealogy questions, which consist of requests for obituaries. This communication tool thing is the most exciting to me. Wish I could learn more. Well we did a google chat last Thursday so we got some practice. Lorraine and I chatted!

Now, I took the photo album and made a slide show out of it. I decided to delete the people's pics whom may not want photos online. Talked about privacy at the training meeting. Good info from LeeAnn. I took the image tool Warhohlizer and used it to create an image just for fun. I put it in the same flickr folder as my library images so you will see it in the slideshow. Cool. I do most of this online work at the library since the home is dial up. I am really excited about this Thing as I have many tools to use with my new Canon Powershot A550. I am making a video (30 sec.) to post.

Thing 5 More fun with flickr

I uploaded some photos and made a card, framed a photo and created an album named library. The photos of library were taken in Blue Earth and added to a flickr account. Posted the framed photo. Had fun with that. Learned how to change the page elements in blogger, too. Now comments will be seen. Set up tags on the photos for access to others. Blue Earth Community Library.

Creating a photo collection on-line for public viewing and storage of all those digital photos! Looking at this thing on images, creating, collecting and editing is very exciting. I will spend some more time with it. So far I have shrunk and framed my photos, but there is more....

I read the directions. Umm...good info in the links to librarians blogs. I like the idea of book reviews and events at the library posted for the patrons to see; that's the thing = visual is immediate. A poster at the door of the library is attention getting. RSS would accomplish that if people are looking at their tech device. This Thing 3, I must say, seems to be the same as setting up myyahoo or igoogle. I have feeds in my yahoo to news and websites. That works for me. If I need to add one to this blogspot account I don't see where to put it.

Well, I was wrong on aggregator, it isn't just a blog, it is more like an automatic collector of web based media. Now to get the idea of Really Simple Synchronization (oops, Syndication), it's benefits and how to use it at the library. Visualize a desktop with shortcuts for any question asked. We do get lots of questions. Quick access to the answers is what I am always looking for. With repetitive motion issues my hands do not move as fast as I want.
PS: This is not simple! Do give me comments, I need help. I paste an URL in the RSS field (for Thing 3)but it doesn't accept it, I am still trying.

Thing 2 What is Lib 2.0?

I attended a workshop in Mankato at tzt headquarters. So, Lib2.0 is not just a walk down technology lane. I am going to learn some new vocabulary: aggregator - the blog; paradign shift - total new way of being; institutions efficacy - efficiency?; metadata - meeting knowledge; and ideas like "collaborating cataloging"; transforming information infrastructure. I watched the video, took some notes. Google an "uber-gateway", yup the vocab is a challenge. It makes sence, we do have to "get people back to the library by making the library relevant"(quoting Ms. Houghton). Yeah, there is much learning to be done. That is the purpose of this, so I get up to speed. Stephen Abram says we learn as we reflect and there are unintended consequences (the ripple effect).

Created blog and set the format at workshop in Mankato, January 24. Being from Minnesota and all, my first impression when I saw this workshop was related to the State Fair. I was looking forward to tasting 23 kinds of food. Yeah, I can still fantasize I am having a corndog, cheesecake or hotdish when I dial up the blog. Did anyone else have expectations of culinary delight?
